Who We Are

I started in this field through the big door, at the BBC. It was 1976, and at 17, I got my first job as a photographer for weddings, baptisms, and communions. Shortly after, I enrolled in a film course and studied Philosophy. Between books, cameras, and developing trays, a few years passed until in 1984 I found myself in Rwanda, holding a Bolex camera surrounded by gorillas at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes. It was my baptism with a professional camera, and I must have liked it because the following year, carrying the same equipment, I crossed Lake Tanganyika in a dugout canoe to film the Mahale chimpanzees. From those days until today, a lot has happened, but books, cinema, and education have always been companions on this journey that led me to write, direct, and produce, creating my production company, Turkana Films, to do it freely.

Known for her work leading some of Spain’s main post-production companies –Filmtel, Apuntolapospo, Antaviana Films– and for participating in hundreds of national and international productions, Maria Rosa Fusté has always acted as a producer on carefully selected projects. The end of the war in Sierra Leone in My Image Still Complete, the immigrant camps in Lérida in Sombras, the evolution trilogy in El primer europeo, En busca del futuro perdido, and Desextinción, and the only fiction film shot entirely in the small paradise of Menorca in La vida lliure... Vocation, challenge, giving voice to subjects that would otherwise be forgotten: there is something tremendously eclectic yet coherent in her production. La tempestad is a new opportunity to step out of the comfort zone and bring over 30 years of industry experience to a project innovative in both form and content.
